Steel

Rebar (REinforcing BAR) is a steel bar used as a tension device in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures to strengthen and aid the concrete under tension. Concrete is strong under compression, but has low tensile strength. Rebar significantly increases the tensile strength of the structure. Rebar’s surface features a continuous series of ribs, lugs or indentations to promote a better bond with the concrete and reduce the risk of slippage. The thermal coefficient of steel and concrete is approximately the same, so thermal expansion will not happen. The steel makes a great bond with the concrete to become a robust homogeneous element.

Steel reinforcement bars (Rebars) which go through an intensive thermo mechanical treatment (TMT) are known as TMT Rebars, in which Rebars are quenched with water at a high level pressure so that the outer surface is hardened while the inner core remains soft. Their high strength and flexibility make them useful in reinforced cement concrete (RCC) work and large scale construction projects.

Different grades of steel are available like FE 415/FE 415D/FE 415S/FE 500/FE 500D/FE 500S/FE 550, FE550D, FE 600 as per yield & ultimate tensile strength , and it can be used where high strength is required. BIS rebar sizes are 6, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, 28, 32, 36, 40 and 50 mm.
